Zero Waste Bus Tour

Zero Waste bus tours of the North and South Islands are planned for early next year...

The tours follow on from a successful South Island Zero Waste New Zealand Trust bus tour run in March this year, says trust chief executive officer Jo Knight.

The bus tours are aimed at local body councillors and council staff to enable them to learn about a range of waste minimisation and recycling initiatives, reports the trust’s Zero Waste Update newsletter.

“It’s seeing these projects in operation and talking to people who have set them up that inspires people to see that there are alternatives to landfill,” says Jo.

Information gathered by participants equips them to lead zero waste initiatives in their communities and to help them find ways to solve their local waste management issues.

“It’s also important to encourage councils to make positive steps towards recycling and zero waste in terms of New Zealand’s clean green image for both the tourism and export industries.”

This year’s South Island tour included waste recovery and recycling facilities, a worm farm, a bio-digester, a refuse press and presentations on levy options, education programmes and other local initiatives.

“Zero waste experts and staff were available to answer questions, encourage discussion, compare and comment as the different projects were viewed by participants.

“It also gave the host communities an opportunity to discuss their waste management developments and progress towards zero waste, and a lot of networking took place with participants.”
